monosulfide of iron FeS found in nature as pyrrhotite and as troilite, obtained as brown or black metallic masses by fusing iron and sulfur or as a black precipitate by adding an alkaline sulfide to the solution of a ferrous compound, and used chiefly in making hydrogen sulfide.
Application
t is used in the metallurgical industry in imparting and improving additional mechanical properties of metals and alloys by adding sulfur to the metals in the steel manufacturing industry. Dose
Ferrous sulfate is fairly non-toxic, with an acute oral LD50 at 132-881 mg Fe/kg (rat) and chronic oral NOAEL 57-65 mg Fe/kg/d (rat,90 days) (1). However, it may cause skin and eye irritation. If inhaled, it may also cause headaches, nausea, and respiratory irritations.
